Church and Convent of St Mary Magdalene (XVII century)
Church and Convent of St Mary Magdalene (XVII century)
It also known as Saint Clare or of the Nuns. The convent was founded by the will of the Archpriest Bernardino Galassi and it was built in the seventeenth century after his death, selling all his possessions for six thousand gold crowns. The church was built in 1777 and was dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene. It was realised in rococo baroque style. The convent hosted nuns belonging to the order of the Poor Clare Sisters (Nuns). They devoted themselves to the education of middle-class daughters, but they also welcomed lower-class girls inside their convent. Every Saturday, according to an ancient tradition, the poor of the town received a pittance of bread. From 1925 to 1938, on the premises of the monastery, one of the first small hospital named "St. Francis of Assisi" was located, wanted by Padre Pio for the poor of the town, but after it was closed because of an earthquake. Unfortunately the church of monastery collapsed a few decades ago because of another major earthquake. Today there are only “ruins” and some paintings on crumbling walls.
