THE WAY OF THE CROSS
07,00 – 16,30 (winter) – 07,00 – 18,45 (summer)
Among other works to see in San Giovanni Rotondo there is a beautiful monumental Way of the Cross near the monastery. It is made of granite and bronze, realised by Sicilian artist, Francesco Messina. It is placed on the descent of the mountain towards the convent. The crucial building blocks of the monument took place on 22 September 1968, the day before Saint Pio embraced his Beloved in heaven. In fact, he died the next day at 2.30 am. A bronze statue of the Holy Capuchin indicate the point where the usual commemorative parchment was placed. It was inaugurated on 9 August 1981 and it is an artistic complex which consists of 15 stations, with the addition of the depiction of Jesus who rises from the death. Stations are placed through many hairpin bends that climb up Mount Castellano. Green area of pine forest makes it ideal for praying because it is quiet and surrounded by nature, in religious meditation. Figures are very beautiful and expressive, especially the fifth station, where Padre Pio who helps Jesus to carry his own cross as the Cyrenean is depicted.
