Church of Saint Onofrio Anacoreta (XIII century)
Church of Saint Onofrio Anacoreta (XIII century)
Frederick II of Swabia proclaimed the town of San Giovanni Rotondo “a royal place” associating it to the Abbey of San Giovanni in Lamis. Also the church was built by his will, in the year 1231. Very distinctive is its magnificent facade in Romanesque-Gothic style enhanced by an arched portal, a double niche and a crowning of suspended arches. Above the portal there is an inscription in Gothic characters, in which the date of construction is written. Interesting is the large rose window on the facade, always with a Roman-Gothic style.
In the church, you can admire traces of medieval frescos, a “Nativity” by Antonio Ciccone and a precious painting depicting “Baptism of Jesus Christ” by Francesco Paolo Fiorentino (Ciccone and Fiorentino are two artists of San Giovanni Rotondo). In particular the cult of the Virgin of Mount Carmel is venerated (on 16 July).
